Movie Review : ‘Players’ Is Better Than ‘The Italian Job’
Movie : Players
Director : Abbas-Mustan
Music : Pritam
When it comes to making a thriller, there is no one in Bollywood who can do it better than Abbas-Mustan. And the director duo proves it once again with their latest offering ‘Players’.
Many of Abbas-Mustan’s films have been based slightly or more on Hollywood films but no one can deny the fact that most of them have been turned out to be better than original. And the same goes with ‘Players’ too. The film which is an official remake of Hollywood film ‘The Italian Job’ has turned out so great that it outperforms it’s Hollywood counterpart.
Charlie Masacarenhas(Abhishek Bachchan) is a C.A. and a high profile thief. He plans the biggest heist of his life to steal the gold worth of Rs.10,000 Crore. [During the first world war Romania sent it's treasuries of gold to Russia for the safety from Germans. But Russia never returned the gold and both the countries set on the disputes. However, the matter is solved now and Russia is sending the gold back to Romania by the railway.(if you don't know, it's a true story, except the heist)]. Charlie wants to rob all the gold from the train that is carrying it, but he can’t do it alone. To perform the task, he requires team of experts.
So, he meets his boss Victor Briganza( Vinod Khanna) seeking help to form the team. After early refusal, Victor agrees to help Charlie and introduces him to the team that includes Ronnie(Bobby Deol) an illusionist, Billal(Sikander Kher) an automobile expert and Sunny(Omi Vaidya) a makeup artist. Also a part of the team is Charlie’s girlfriend Ria(Bipasha Basu). But, for the robbery, Charlie also needs the best computer hacker Spider(Neil Nitin Mukesh), whose whereabouts he doesn’t know. However, the problem soon gets solved when his boss’ daughter, Naina Briganza(Sonam Kapoor) get him the location of Spider.
The team(except Naina) is now completed and they start practicals. With great difficulties, they succeed in their plan to steal the gold. But the story takes unexpected turn when one of the members tries to kill Charlie and colleagues and run away with the stolen gold. The person also kills Charlie’s boss Victor Briganza.
Now, after a year, all of survived team members decide to rob the gold from the person who has cheated them, thus taking a revenge of their loss. This time, they are joined by Naina Briganza too who wants to avenge her father’s death. How do they find their enemy, perform another heist and take their revenge is the rest of the story.
First half of the film is very racy, the first heist that takes place here will leave you completely awestruck. Second half is equally great too and will take you on a roller coaster ride.
Screenplay written by Rohit Jugraj and Sudip Sharma is the biggest plus point of ‘Players’. It keeps you on the edge of your seat through out the film. It doesn’t allow you to get bore at any moment during the whole film. Ravi Yadav’s cinematography is outstanding in the film. Alan Amin’s action sequences are executed really well.
Music of the film, which received average response on it’s release, is actually a positive point of the film. There are three songs in it’s narrative and all of them are delight to watch. Particularly, ‘Kyun Dooriyan’ picturized on Sonam Kapoor and Neil Nitin Mukesh is very sensual.
Director Duo Abbs-Mustan has done a brilliant job. They have added enough number of twists and turns into the film that makes it even more interesting than the original version. They know what audience expect from the film and serve it in different style.
Abhishek Bachchan is in full form in ‘Players’. He carries the film on his shoulder and acts perfectly. After playing cops in number of films, the actor essays a role of a thief with equal ease. Sonam Kapoor is being seen in her sexiest best in the film and shows her dancing talent. Bipasha Basu is as usual scorching the screen with her hot look. Her role is a quite similar to the one she played in ‘Race’. Bobby Deol has a good role but it would have been great to see him in the full film. Neil Nitin Mukesh would surely get lots of praise for his role in the film. This is one of the best performance of Neil’s career. Sikander Kher and Omi Vaidya act good. Johnny Lever does what he does best – comedy.
Our View : ‘Players’ – The Indian Job is better than ‘The Italian Job’. Make sure, you don’t miss to watch this edgy thriller in theater.
