Movie Review : ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ Starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif And Anushka Sharma
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, a love triangle, is the last directorial film of late filmmaker Yash Chopra who has given us some of the most memorable films of Indian cinema. The film stars Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the leading roles.
‘JTHJ’ opens with Samar Anand(Shahrukh Khan) as a member of bomb defusing squad in Indian army. He is fearless person who isn’t afraid of death and is known as ‘A man who can’t die’. He defuses bombs without even wearing a bomb suit. Here enters, Akira Rai(Anushka Sharma) in the picture, she is a documentary filmmaker who has come to make a film on Samar’s life. Over the period, she develops a bond with Samar and becomes his close associate. One day, she incidentally finds Samar’s personal diary which reveals about his past life.
Now, (in flashback) the story shifts to London where Samar has been working hard to earn his livelihood. There, he meets a beautiful rich girl Meera Thapar(Katrina Kaif) who is already engaged. However, she still falls in love with Samar who also loves her madly. But some circumstances forces Meera to call their relationship off which leaves him a broken heart.
Samar then decides to leave London and join Indian army. (Back to present) Akira has now got feelings for Samar and he has a soft corner for her too. But destiny has written something else and it brings Meera back in Samar’s life, forming a complicated relationships.
‘JTHJ’ is written by Aditya Chopra and Devika Bhagat and they have made it sure that it has some great romantic moments but there are many flaws in the script. Its first half is interesting but has many inconvincing twists, while second half is a complete drag. The film could have been shorten by at least half an hour.
A.R.Rahman’s music is just okay, you will surely miss his magical touch. ‘Jeeya Re’ shot in the valleys is the best song of the film and pasteurizes Kashmir’s beauty perfectly. ‘Ishq Shava’ is energetic and it’s choreographed really well.
What makes ‘JTHJ’ really worth a watch is Yash Chopra’s impeccable direction; there are many scenes in the film where you would feel his classic touch. But it’s still a far cry from usual Yash Chopra films ‘Chandni’, ‘Lamhe’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ or ‘Veer Zaara’.
Shahrukh Khan is one of the best actors Bollywood have ever had and he proves it right once again in the romantic drama. Whether it’s a love boy Samar who is mad in love or the broken heart summer who has so much angst that he isn’t scared of any risk, SRK has portrayed every emotion brilliantly. Katrina Kaif has acted well and looks gorgeous throughout the film. But it’s Anushka Sharma who steals the show. In a role of a bubbly and adventurous Akira, Anushka becomes the soul of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. Anupam Kher hasn’t much to do. Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor are great in their cameos.
Our View : ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is not a classic, but definitely a heart-warming love story.
